Patent Intelligence as Early Warning
Patent filings reveal competitor strategy 12-24 months before any product launch. Here's how to read the signals.
Beyond Counting Patents
Most companies track patent counts. That's table stakes. Strategic patent intelligence answers different questions: What technology subdomain are they clustering in? Which inventors are new β signalling a capability acquisition? Where are they filing β revealing target markets?
A competitor who files 50 patents in battery housing design is doing R&D. A competitor who files 50 patents in battery housing design while simultaneously filing in Indonesia and Thailand is planning a manufacturing expansion into Southeast Asia. The geography of patent filings is a market entry map.
The Four Signal Types
1. IPC/CPC Cluster Shifts: Sudden increases in specific classification codes reveal new R&D focus areas. A mechatronics company that suddenly files heavily in G06N (machine learning) is building AI capabilities.
2. Inventor Network Changes: New inventors on patent filings signal talent acquisition β either hires from competitors or poaching from universities. Departure of key inventors suggests reorganisation or spin-off activity.
3. Filing Geography: Companies file patents in markets where they plan to manufacture or sell. A Chinese competitor filing patents in Germany is preparing for European market entry.
4. Grant vs. Application Ratio: A spike in grants suggests mature technology ready for commercialisation. A surge in new applications signals increased R&D investment.
Building a Patent Watch
You don't need an IP lawyer to run basic patent intelligence. Free tools (Google Patents, Espacenet, CNIPA) provide alerting on classification codes and assignees. The key is setting up the right queries and reviewing them weekly. For deeper analysis β cross-referencing patent activity with hiring and certification data β specialised CI platforms or consultants can automate the heavy lifting.
